- Ballet Slippers or Adorable?
First
let me start off saying I consider my self as intelligent and as “a mans man”.
If not for this class I would not even consider sitting long enough to load
this video to a computer let along sit and listen. But the topic and the way
Dr. Iyengar presented held my attention.
Dr.
Iyengar studies how people choose and what
makes people think we're good at it. She asks and makes a point “is having a
choice or having so many of them good”?
This
was a very interesting video. And what I got out of this as far as my thoughts
and assumptions is that the art of choosing is a culture question. Dr. Iyengar showed the difference
between the Japanese culture and the American culture. And this was a great
example in contrast of culture standards. What is appropriate and inappropriate according to cultural standards is
how I feel is the correct option of choice.
I can only descript my
understanding or feelings on choice as an American. Having the freedom to make
my own choices is something as an African-American with Latino ancestry is
something that I feel is a right. My forefathers fought incredibly hard for me
to have this right of choose. But there have been recent events that the
government has taken the option of choice away a far a health care. This not a
political blog, so I not going to debate rather this is right or wrong. But
this is an example of a culture shift.
I completely agree with Dr. Iyengar and her assumptions on
the culture feelings of Americans on the topic of choice. But, I do see the
point that she makes when giving an example of a leaders duty
to protect those who don't know any better, whether it’s business or government
involvement, from making the wrong choice.
